This annual ‘amateur’ hour may just be one of our most popular sessions. But we’ve decided to shake things up again this year. We’re dedicating 90 minutes of stage time to the Open Microphone Contest. And we’ll pick two winners to help close our Saturday afternoon session with a repeat performance! Why are we doing this? Because, when it comes to a good story, just about anyone can come off like a pro. This is especially so on our stage, where many members of the audience are practiced, proven performers. You just never know who is going to show up...or even the magnitude of what you might hear.

In 2008, for example, Olivia Merryman debuted on our stage. At seven. (Years old that is, not o’clock.) But she clocked in with one of the best performances of the festival. Established Tellers were scrambling not to have to follow her act! She later expanded on this experience, entering the National Youth Storytelling Showcase in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, where she won the elementary division. And this year, at the ripe old age of twelve, she has a featured performance on our schedule (for the fifth, much-anticipated time now).

And in 2009, Slash Coleman graced our stage for the Open Mic. He’s famous from PBS, and his one man shows like ‘The Neon Man and Me.’ How good was the story he told? Well, he ended up in our Featured Teller lineup for 2010! (And we hope to have him back sometime in the near future.)

Are you this year’s Olivia? Or Slash? Do you have a compelling tale to tell? We’d love to hear it. Get on the list early though, because time is tight. (Okay, it’s already late, but the sooner the better now!)
