This is Geraldine Buckley’s third visit to the Brandywine Storytelling Festival. Her first visit was a delightful surprise for anyone who hadn’t heard her perform before. Her themes reflect the highs and lows of human nature, and the common threads that we all share.
In fact, she’s fresh off of another appearance at the National Storytelling Festival, where she wowed the crowd at the Exchange Place!
With her trademark wit, warmth and humor, Geraldine has been involved in storytelling, performance poetry, and creative workshops for over twenty years in the US, Canada, England, Holland, South Africa and Spain.
Focusing on folk stories and tales from her own life, Geraldine takes the audience on a magic carpet ride of adventure, laughter, and insight that leaves listeners both entertained and moved. And my does Geraldine have stories! In her eclectic past she has been, among other things, a minister in a large London Church, a radio DJ, a television newsreader, an events director, a ghostwriter, a food critic, a magazine editor, and an award winning performance poet. Her most recent adventure was being the Chaplain in the largest men’s prison in Maryland -- a medium-security facility.
Geraldine believes that stories are a gift - a living gift. They bypass the head and lodge in the heart. Sometimes their power is activated at the moment they are heard; at other times they are like a sleeping seed that shoots back up into our life in the springtime of need, bringing laughter or truth or solace.
Whether they are tall tales or true tales, ancient or modern, stories have a way of bonding listeners together as they become fellow travelers on a magic carpet ride to the land of long ago and far away. Perhaps our global village would be less fraught, and peace more prevalent, if politicians and diplomats remembered the truth that we all knew as children: That the shortest distance between two hearts is a story.
Last year, she released her second CD: ‘Devils on Horseback: And Other Odd Journeys,’ which you’re sure to find in the media tent at this year’s Brandywine Storytelling Festival.
