ByHeart is the storytelling duo of Mary-beth Howard and Shelley Gnade. For more than a dozen years now they have been telling stories in two voices. Together they share stories from many cultures and traditions, illustrating our common bonds. Their performances often incorporate movement, song, and other means of creative expression.

Mary-beth and Shelley believe that storytelling is a sacred art. As old as time.

"Story is where we find the meanings and reasons for all life's questions," they say. "Myths, folktales, and biblical stories are at the heart of the telling.
This is ByHeart’s first appearance at the Lower Brandywine Storytelling Festival, where they will be conducting the Workshop “Scripture By Heart: The Art of Biblical Storytelling.”

Shelley Gnade is originally from Salisbury, Maryland. She earned a B.A. from Drew University and an M.B.A. from the University of Delaware. She has served as a board member of the Network of Biblical Storytellers (NOBS), and chaired the organization's national Festival Gathering in 2000 and 2001.

Mary-beth Howard was raised in New York City. She earned a B.A. from Colorado College and an Ed.M. from Boston University. She is a 5th & 6th grade humanities teacher at the Tatnall School, and a past board member of NOBS. She joins Shelley as a regular workshop leader at the organization's annual Festival Gathering.
